Liposuction

What is it?

Liposuction is a surgical technique that is usually performed under general anaesthetic. Unwanted fat is sucked out through tiny incisions in the skin using apparatus that works the same way as a vacuum cleaner to contour areas of fat.

The procedure can be performed on your abdomen so it is an option for helping you achieve a flat tummy. Recommendations are that it is best suited for people that are within 10-15 pounds of their ideal weight, but might have areas of fat they don't want, or that doesn't really match to the rest of their bodies. Reportedly, that have been occasions of individuals that have had 50 pounds of fat removed but it is very important to note that there are certain factors that limit the amount of fat that can be safely removed in one session, and that there can be negative aspects to removing too much fat. These could include the appearance of weight loss to be greater than the amount of fat removed, lumpiness or dents in the skin.

In some cases a technique called ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) could be an alternative choice.

Does it hurt after?

There is soreness, tenderness, swelling and brusing and your body might feel like you have 'over-done-it' but your surgeon can prescribe medications to help control these afterwards. Once the swelling and bruising have diminished, you'll be able to see the results more clearly. The recommendation is to take at least a week off work to recover from the surgery and most people should be able to return thereafter and perform light daily activities. Anything strenuous should be reserved for another three weeks or so.

The procedure is performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon of your choice who would hold a consultation with you at which he/she should go through all the details, discuss your individual lifestyle with you, inform you of all the possible complications that could occur, and together you and your surgeon would assess and decide if lipo would be the best choice and suitable for you.
